Phantom’s Weekend at Frensham Pond SC
The inaugural Frensham Pond SC Phantom Open meeting and training day took place
over the weekend of the 2nd & 3rd April.
Simon Childs kindly provided a training day on the 2nd taking 12 boats through some
set-up discussions and on shore boat tuning before a couple of sessions on the water.
Taking advantage of a warm hazy day with 10- 15 knots of SW breeze the Phantoms
ran a series of windward/leeward courses with Simon coaching from a coachboat in
amongst the fleet. After lunch the fleet ran an additional start in the Club afternoon
race with everyone getting amongst the action. Simon also fitted in some measuring of
boats and sails.
After a good afternoons session there was a debriefing session in the clubhouse which
became a bit of a Q&A session with everyone feeling that it had been a really useful
day and good preparation for the Phantom Open the following day.
Sunday morning dawned, hazy and warm but with very little wind. By the 10 15 briefing
Race Officer Bruce Hill was able to work with 10 – 15 knots reasonably steady SW
wind. Setting a typical Frensham round the cans course meant that the 17 strong
fleet got away to a good start but the local boys of Clive Eplett sailing Simon Childs
borrowed boat and Tim Hemsley led the fleet from start to finish with visitors Ian
Jay, Tim Andrews and Nick Orman learning the conditions quickly to come 3,4 & 5
respectively.
Race 2 was a very different affair with the visitors getting the hang of the conditions to
set the early pace with Ian Jay & Tim Andrews getting away but slowly being caught
by Nick Orman, Clive Eplett and Jeremy Hudson out in his new boat.
Final positions were Tim Andrews, Nick Orman and Ian Jay with Clive Eplett and
Jeremy Hudson following them over the line.
This left the event wide open with 4 people able to win the event outright, Clive Eplett,
Tim Hemsley, Tim Andrews and Nick Orman. Off the start line Tim A and Nick Orman set the
early pace leaving the fleet behind. However a mix up over the course saw them lose
the lead with Clive Eplett gaining the most to take the lead. Tim Hemsley had been
steadily climbing through the fleet to take second place with Nick Orman tussling with Nick
Mason for third place.
Final results were winner overall; Clive Eplett in Simon Childs clearly quick boat, with
Tim Hemsley 2nd, Tim Andrews 3rd, Nick Orman 4th and Ian Jay 5th.
Both days sailing had been excellent with Frensham Pond basking in warmth and
enough wind to keep everyone happy and the lightweights overpowered and working
hard.
The prizegiving was followed by an enormous tea which everyone demolished happily.
The event formed part of the Phantom Southern Series Sponsored by Exmoor Ales
Brewery and as usual they provided all the competitors with a bottle of beer.
Many thanks to all the Frensham team that arranged an excellent event and we look
forward to the next one.
