Winter Champs
« on: March 10, 2014, 05:06:04 PM »

I went to Bough Beech for the Winters on Saturday - and what a lovely day it was! I haven't done a Phantom event before (except one open at my home club) so I was a bit nervy on the start line, but it was definitely good fun.

Some conclusions:

 - We should always have sunshine and a force 3 to 4. Can we arrange that?
 - I don't have the leverage upwind in that weather. I couldn't foot or point to make up for being too short (5'9'') or light (84kg). Not sure what to do about that. Downwind I made up some ground though (water?).
 - The fleet is friendly and mainly fair. Some pumping. But no-one was overly aggressive, which was nice.
 - Contenders fall in a lot. Looked quite easy until those slow-mo windward capsizes.
 - I need better starts. Got rolled over every time.
 - I need better hikers.

Overall I was pleased with three fifth places (best forget the second race), and I think I'll do some other events. I would certainly recommend others to give it a go.

Alex,

Didn't realise you were a new boy on the block - it didn't show!  Get yourself to Alton Water for the training day and you will soon sort out those complaints!
