Help for the back of the fleet
« on: June 22, 2010, 11:11:34 PM »

Having attended the Nationals last year at Llandudno I was struck by the relaxed and friendly reception from the "elite" sailors to those of us "also rans". With this in mind, is there anyone from the elite willing to give a brief talk to those of us at the back of the fleet - I'm not meaning a full conference with Powerpoint presentation; just a few pointers on how to rig, trim, sail and maintain our boats to get the best from them. I for one would appreciate any help - and I'd be prepared to get in the first round.

Thanks

Hi Paul
I'd be happy to help on that
Though I'm pretty new to the Phantom so you may get better rigging advise etc from one of the more experienced Phantomers...

Cheers

Good man for volunteering Nick,

May I suggest you train before the racing and you follow the guys offering support and advice throughout the event?

NO?  Oh well. ;D

Paul I am sure I can speak for any of the regulars towards the front of the fleet that you would do well just making yourself known and asking the questions at any time.

We all seem to have different ways of setting our boats up and the adjustments we make are different although we generally start with Simon Childs bible settings as a datum point.

Add to that he fact we all use sightly different gear the questions might be best directed to someone who is successfully using the same mast/sail combination and of a similar weight to yourself.

That said the same basics of flat boat and time on the water are the key.

Look me up as well and would be happy to offer any help I can to those asking.

Cheers Simon

Simon's statement holds true, find another boat with a similar rig, and as long as they are "usually" quicker than you then ask to do some pre race sailing... ;)

I run a 55mm SS & PnB on boat 1175, anyone with a similar boat is free to copy my settings, and do some practice sails etc 8)

Of course if you are one on the quick boys, feel free to give advice that need it :D

Thanks for the responses - I'll make myself known in the bar. I fairly happy with my boat setup, just need to know how to get the best out of it. Having moved up from a Laser, the Phantom is a far more technical boat and takes a bit of getting used to.

Thanks again

Paul,

Phantom only has one more control than a Laser, the forestay... ;)

But sail it like a Laser and you will go quick :D

Trust me I used to sail lasers along with 75% of the fleet ::)

C U at the bar...
