2012 PY any talk of changes
« on: February 08, 2012, 04:29:08 PM »

Hello all,

Has there been much talk on PY changes this year for the phantom, have looked at various site normally loads of gossip on this, can't find any.

I now sail my boat in Canada and for the interest of the US sailors I have been in contact with the US sailing, who have agreed to work on a provisional US rating (which Canada uses also) for the Phantom. My new club is a bit bemused with the phantom, leading to a 470 sailor claiming I should be giving him time on handicap.

Calum,
normally the UK portsmouth scheme is announced at the Dinghy Show here in the UK which is being held on the first weekend of 2012, so you will get a better idea of what is happening officially after that.

For the purposes of coming up with a number, well in the UK we have the 470, 420, 505, Contender, Laser, Laser Radial & Finn which your federation should be aware of. You should be able roughly calculate the number based on how our current PY sits within those numbers.

I sailed my Phantom for years up in Edinburgh  only moved to Canada with my boat last year, just that normally lots of speculation on handicaps, seems very calm on the forums.

Have done comparisons with the lists but they seems to be inconsistant. Agreed a handicap with my local club based on that, but if I want to travel to events need something more official. Standard of sailing locally is pretty patchy, and the boats are generally older. As a keen racer I will need to travel to some of the bigger events. US sail have said they will give me a provisional rating, so when I get it I will post it on the site.

Sail shuts down in Canada for winter so suffering from withdrawal, roll on the summer

Also had a lot of interest from local sailor about the boat, so may consider importing a couple

I have found the sailjuice (great lakes) handicaps fairly good, although I think in the wind we have no chance sailing off 1015.

My bet is it will drop to 1030.

I agree with Andy

1015 can be a tough handicap in a phantom in breeze see Bloody Mary results, however we did OK in the force 2 on flat water at the Steve Nicholson @ Northampton..

1020-1025 might be a better alround handicap for all conditions & venues....

Hi all,
Last autumn I ran several analyses of last year's racing for a fair return to RYA, based around various different Class local front runners and came up with PY=1022.
RS400 (950 ~stet), RS300 (1000 stet), Streaker (1162 stet), Laser-1 (1110 needs much more favouring).
Still tough for windy, & favourable in lighter.
I can relate to the old PYs around the 100's, and had difficulty when it changed to 1000's. For example a change of 2-in-100, or in a 40-minute Club race of  only 48-seconds (I can do that in my head: 0.4x2=0.8; 0.8x60=48), seems neither here-nor-there, while a change of 20 from 1035 to 1015 although the same thing, has attached a huge "Wow-factor".

Hi Andy
our handicap has been 1030 for the last year.
Have you been getting away with it at your home club?

Going by the last few years my guess is a smaller drop to 1028.

Will still have to change the split in my clubs handicap or i will end up racing  a 800 and a 49er.

Regards

Gordon - sorry thought it was 1035... 1028 would be ok.

When I said 1015 isnt bad thats only because all the other classes had been changed a lot in the sailjuice, like the merlin etc.

...which all brings up the question of whether woodies should be sailed off a different PY.  If you consider that boats of the age of mine (20+ years) were being sailed off 1056 when new, the change is quite significant - especially going sub-1030.

Clearly, I understand that the PY has had to catch up with the improvements in the boat and the fact that those sailing the boat (at least where RYA returns are made) are generally of a high standard.  This has led to a more realistic PY and no one wants to be be labelled a 'PY bandit'.

HOWEVER, serious consideration really should be given to how you rate woodies at open and national events.  Sailing at club level in mixed handicap is a different matter - that can be sorted out at club level.  But how many woodies do you see at events? three at the Nationals.  Now I already get the feeling I'm a gate-crasher at someone else's party.

Myfeeling is that until I upgrade, I'll continue to feel like the joker in the pack.

I think woodies should sail under a different handicap they are not as fast.

But not at the Nationals or at an open meeting, otherwise the whole event becomes a handicap farse...

Probably not unreasonable - what's that, about 15 seconds on a 1 hour race??

Any idea how the Streaker has been affected cos that was miles out (IMHO of course!!)
