equivalent sails
« on: June 22, 2013, 07:33:55 PM »

Hi All,
I was unfortunate enough to rip a sail a while back. Insurance company have ased what make and what is the equivalent. It was a flat cut Redeye. Seems they are out of the sail business now. New to Phantoms (and sailing in general) and was wondering what the general consensus is about appropriate replacement. Wooden boat, 13.5st helm.

Give sp boats a call, elite sails. Tell him Ed Thomas put you on to him and he will sort you out. If you need his number let me know.

The companies making sails are
North
P&b
Hd
Speed
And others and I suspect that most of them produce a flat cut sail. North are the most expensive. P&b are good, in fact they are all pretty good

I recommend trying Jim Hunt at HD sails.
He will design something right for your mast and weight.

I'll second the HD sail,  I got one last year. Brilliant, went out and won my first open using it.

Thanks for the info guys. Which of these would be the rough equivalent of the Redeye in terms of quality/price? Can't see an insurance company stumping up for a North 3D at £1300 when the Redeye was the equivalent of a damp hankie?

Red eye / evolution sails were actually made by Lonton and Gray here in Burnham on Crouch. Give Ian Gray a call for a quote. 01621 786200

My favourite sail for howling conditions is the flat cut sail based on the last Evolution cross cut design but I think they also have a number of radial cuts as well.

Usually great value.
