Port Dinorwic SC Open - 21 Sept 2014.
The sun shone and a gentle breeze wafted the Phantoms along at the Port Dinorwic Open – not a cloud in the sky and an idyllic setting – perfect! Overheating was more of a problem. The event, part of the Phantom North 2014 series sponsored by Standards Plus Ltd (
www.standardsplus.co.uk), was combined with PDSC’s Rawson Cup and Bart’s Bash.
Nine Phantoms took part in a windward-leeward course to keep everyone out of the currents in the middle of Menai Straights. At the briefing we were told that we could go “as close to the harbour wall as we liked” - good advice and those who took it benefitted. As the laps increased, the boats got closer and closer to the harbour wall – which must have been great spectator sport (from the top of the wall!) We had plenty of tacking practice!! The downwind legs were with the tide and seemed to fly by.
Ed Thomas (TB4E) took first place, Martin Knott (Ribble SC) took second place and Matt Neild (Royal Windermere YC) in third. The second race saw Thomas and Knott followed by Adam Perry (Pennine SC).
After a lunch break, a chicken curry followed by “T&C’s” (that’s “tea and cakes” to Phantom sailors), PDSC held the Bart’s Bash race. With one end of the start line providing all the excitement, nearly fifty boats raced a triangular course, this time crossing the tide which was by now much less strong. Martin Knott sailed really well, wining the third race and (provisionally) the Bart’s Bash at PDSC, with Thomas second and Perry third.
Thank you to PDSC for hosting this event, arranging the weather, the race office, rescue and galley.
