Windermere Open 13 April 2014
« on: March 23, 2014, 06:22:04 PM »

Royal Windermere Yacht Club are hosting the second event of the Phantom North 2014 series which is sponsored by www.standardsplus.co.uk on Sunday 13 April. This is the first time RWYC have hosted a Phantom event for quite a while and a good turn out would make them very happy.

Follow this link http://www.royal-windermere.co.uk/ for the NOR / SI's and more details.

Set in the beautiful Lake District, it's got "weekend break" written all over it. Plenty for the "land crew" to do whilst you enjoy a different view of the mountains. RWYC have a choice of using the north end of the lake or the south end, "what ever the weather".

This is the "Scotland -v- north" event for 2014, so let's see how we get on - after all this could be an International Event next year!! Post a reply on this forum if you're thinking of coming.

Got this one in the diary. Will be my first sail in ages so looking forward to it.

Can we drop boats off on the Saturday morning?

Cheers

Hi Adam that's absolutely fine to drop the boat off then, just press the buzzer on the gate and someone will let you in.
Thanks Matt

I may be being a bit thick (wouldn't be the first time) but it mentions prebooking today but I've looked on the website and flyer and can't see anyway of signing on? Could someone point me in the right direction?

Hi to all,

It's always difficult to plan for the number of visitors at an event - and it's always nice to know how many are coming (= how much bacon and how many butties to buy). So if you can help by entering the event before the day, that would be a great help for RWYC. Best behavior now, this is our "first date" with the Lake District!

Think of it the other way round - running out of bacon or butties!

Send the entry form, available from the RWYC website, with a cheque for £15 payable to RWYC to the Hon Sailing Secretary she will collate everything.

The club address is:
Royal Windermere yacht Club
Fallbarrow Road
Bowness on Windermere
Cumbria
LA23 3DJ

You can enter on the day and there is no increase in price for that (but no free b-b's !!).

On the Saturday night there is a live band on at the club as well so if anyone is up we can kick the open off with a good party.

Did someone mention bacon.....

Hi Matt
Turning up on the day will be fine, so don't worry about that and im sure everyone will get a bacon buttie, that's my brothers contribution to the open meeting as well as driving one of the ribs. Anyone is welcome to contact me regarding any info they need for the Windermere open on nieldy11@hotmail.co.uk
Look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Hi to all Phantom Sailors,

Looks like a great weather forecast for the Windermere Phantom Open meeting this Sunday (13 April 2014) – force 3 gusting force 4 from the west, with average temperatures of 8oC. The first race starts at 11.00 hrs so get there early and avoid the traffic. Would be really good for Phantoms and for Royal Windermere YC if we had 20 boats turn up,  making it worthwhile for all. Hope to see you there.

Thanks for coming guys was a good day, although feeling it today, need to eat more pies as well!  A few suggestions for next season so we can work on making it even better, think we could make it into a big event as we aren't exactly short on space, as we found out yesterday with those monstrous beats.

Nine Phantoms entered the Royal Windermere's first ever event held for this fantastic class.
After a warm welcome and bacon butties the fleet set of into the north end of the lake to face a strong, gusty westerly wind. Challenging for competitors and the race management team alike.
A course was set and the fleet got away cleanly. Unfortunately, the wind shifted giving a one sided beat, but on a plus, some great reaching. Due to the fast pace the race course was fully completed in under half an hour, something the PRO would sort for the afternoons entertainment...
1st Ed Thomas
2nd Matt Harris
3rd Richard Rigg
After lunch competitors made their way back out onto the water to face much larger courses. Laps of comparable size to the nationals were to prove a test of stamina and skill as the wind strength had increased further from the morning race. Gusts well over twenty miles per hour whistled through and the gybe mark claimed its first victims of the day. Not surprisingly, the lighter sailers started to fade as the afternoon drew on. The heavier sailors pulling away on the long, hard beats. However, all Phantoms had some blistering down wind legs. The acceleration of the Phantoms on the reach was breath taking at times, the gybe, heart stopping!  The result though the same order as the first race for the top 3.
1st Ed Thomas
2nd Matt Harris
3rd Richard Rigg

The third and final race of the day used the same size course with the wing mark being move slightly further south to get a slightly shyer reach and more speed!
For the third time everyone got away cleanly, although the helms who had done more than their fair share of swimming in the second race were now really feeling the pace (Martin Knott and Matt Nield were in close competition for who went swimming the most both being feather weights in phantom terms). One boat had gone back early through exhaustion and although the remaining competitors all stuck it out to the bitter end, complaints of "not enough weight" or "too old" could be heard in the bar at the prize giving!
Capsizes were a plenty in the final race, including a particularly spectacular one from local lad Richard Rigg in his brand new Ovington flying machine. Riggy had come back from his honeymoon early just so he could do this meeting. Speculation was rife about the knowledge, or lack there of, that his bride had about the new boat!!
Ollie Shaw managed a excellent 3rd place in this last race with Dave Kellsall plugging away in the hard conditions and finishing a creditable 4th place in this final race.
All Phantoms that stayed out for the last race finished it to their credit, and bruised, battered and exhausted they all limped back to the warmth of the club house.
Some great prizes were duly awarded and we look forward to having a bigger, better event on Windermere next season.
Well done to Richard Rigg for finishing a excellent 3rd place in his first ever Phantom open, and also to Matt Harris who is also new to the fleet for going one better and finishing 2nd, and last but not least Ed Thomas for a clean sweep in all 3 races.
