I sailed at Rock SC for a national championship regatta in another class many years ago. I remember it being a great place to go sailing for a few days. It's very picturesque and the club was really good. Just wondering if anyone knows whether the racing for our Nats will be in the Camel Estuary or whether they will put us out into the open sea in Padstow Bay? I'm equally happy either way - the estuary is big, but just wondering what conditions to expect.

The nationals is meant to be held on the sea so hopefully in the bay.
It's about time we got back to 70+ entries could this great venue be the one to get us back there...

It is a pretty epic venue - not one to be missed. I've got my accommodation booked already 😎

Nationals are meant to be held in a TIDAL location which means estuary or sea.
Conditions on the day will dictate location. No reason why we cant do either or both over the weekend
No point in binning it off because the sea is rough and the estuary is sailable is there?

I do hope the club can find a way to accommodate us. Might be the only event I can do this year.
It is difficult even with the 1m plus distancing coming in, part of the reason we go to Nationals is to socialise with other Phantom sailors don't know how big the clubhouse is so not sure if this will be sensible. Also you have to consider will we get the entries to cover the costs if people are uncertain.(Should have gone for the January entry then quite a lot might already be committed)
Not an easy decision for the class or the club all you can do is keep talking to them.

We can do it with a bit of thought Gordon. Social bubbles in the evening could solve main problem. Rigging launching shower sailing I don't see a problem apart from rescue and committee boats having to be in a family bubble. Needing rescue could be a problem...

Current government guidelines state you cannot organise events of more then 6 people - this would include the race committee in an event - as such regardless of any social bubbles currently its grey area but a no go and would still be regardless of when we took entries
Based on today's news its looking even less likely by the day but is forever changing, but there has to be a cut off

We were hoping to start club racing 4th July but now not looking likely.
I am sure were all hoping Boris will ease things a bit more then you see images like Bournemouth beach and news of the Leicester patch. Not good

I was encouraged to note just now that both RSWC and B14 websites presently have the combined euros\nats event still scheduled for early September.
but if Covid does prevent Rock then Phantoms won't have an open sea nationals for at least two years 😥

RYA guidelines say max groups of 30. The way I see it outside sport is allowed and it's within the rules to use your own judgement and on that basis if Rock are happy to run it then it should go ahead or we find try another venue that would like the income and prestige of holding a Phantom nationals. Football is now on with no crowd but there must be around 100 people at least to put matches on. Same goes for horse racing. And mass protests and street parties are also allowed so a 50 or 60 single hander a couple of miles out at sea is not going to break any rules I know of. Also before anyone brings it up rescue is allowed RNLI do it so do RAC and AA. We could even put a max wind strength rule to show a bit of compromise in the circumstances F4 max maybe...
I think unless it a yes to nationals going ahead we should give it until the end of July cos by then we will know if all the idiots not behaving have caused a big second wave and we have another lockdown and no choice anyway.

17 June RSWC posted that they hope to be able to host events as restrictions are eased - 2 metre social distancing is difficult
July 4 English Covid guidelines reduce social distancing to 1 metre plus - thus making mixed Andromeda (RO boat) and rib crewing possible
Single-handers on open water with dinghy park precautions doesn't breach guidelines
UK Gov has always acknowledged that exercise is beneficial to
nb RYA are continually adapting their guidance
Briefings in September can be done in groups of less than 30 in the area adjacent to the clubhouse
Briefings and site specific Covid info could be shared via Youtube perhaps
Compromise measures may include not racing in the Bay when winds exceed 17 knots
Allocate a designated buddy to assist with launching/recovering & trolleys - fortunately Rock has easy launching and plenty of beach head space
I believe the RYA are to review their guidance tomorrow so we should see what that says. Rock are keen to hold it so all looking positive to me !!

Like you Gordon I'm going for the excellent beer that's brewed down there. Can you imagine how good that first pint will taste after a hard race...

The front page of the website says the class would update us at the end of June, so whats the score? Has the decision been delayed if so please let us know.

Hi Gordon,
We are trying to give the members of the Association the best chance of having a safe Nationals this year - but there are many issues to resolve and we are doing our best to understand these and agree a way forward. The decision will be made shortly I hope and as soon as it is available I'll shout loud and clear.

Phantom National Championships - Update
Over the past few months the Class Association have been considering the ever changing position of the Covid 19 restrictions and hoping they will be lifted enough to be able to run our planned National Championships at Rock Sailing Club at the end of September.
The recent poll with members of their intentions to attend the event has been well supported and is helpful information. Our thanks to all those who responded both on Facebook and by E mail.
The committee apologises for the delay in communicating our review, which continues to take longer than expected, due to the changing situation.
At this point in time, Rock S.C. are still keen to host the event but we are awaiting a response as to their detailed risk assessment and plan on how they will organise all aspects the event. They have just cancelled the B14’s and also Camel week, so the outlook seems bleak, but we hope to find a solution.
Once this plan has been shared with the committee will decide if the National Championships can be safely held in line with the Governments Covid 19 regulations and the current RYA guidance which the plan must support.
This decision will be definitively made and communicated by the 1st August at the lastest.
We are passionate about our class, love of the sport and will continue to work hard in delivering what we all wish for ...... A safe and enjoyable National Championships.
