Andy Couch ‘Left’ With the 2014 Phantom National Title.

The dust has settled on the 2014 National Championship sponsored by Seabrook Developments following a slow moving but very eventful championships where Andy Couch took his fifth National Championship within the Class.

Several of the 49 Helms massed at Stone Sailing Club the day before in time for preparation, tuning, polishing and practice but found that finding a pitch for the tent, a curry and the odd drop of rum and coke (diet of course) was more appealing given the forecast of light winds making way for no wind.

Racing on Friday afternoon provided a constant breeze of 7 kts or so giving great racing throughout the fleet.  Race One saw Couch take the win from the returning local Lawrence Crispin borrowing a boat from Ovington and Andy Davis from HD Sails who appears to have taken over as Phantom guru at the loft.  Will Gulliver and Paul Beasley rounded out the top five.

Race Two showed again that the left paid up the first beat giving Couch the win followed by Davis, Gulliver, Crispin and Mike Tustin who was revelling in the lighter conditions.  Ashore the fleet were treated to ‘Phil’s BBQ’ where much of the discussion turned to the weakening forecast. Two pairs of “Phil’s Dyneema Scissors” were handed out one for each race.

The fleet woke to find a mirror spread across the Blackwater.  Without the sun in sight concern spread that there might not be the all-important third race that would constitute a series.  Andy Davis gave an impromptu demonstration with many regretting taking notes as there was more information than the hangovers could remember.  Discussion of running the event again stopped when late in the afternoon a small breeze started to build and Wendy Robinson, the PRO, sent the fleet out at the bottom of the tide to try and get a race in before it turned.  The fleet leapt like gazelles to their charges and headed out.

The race was pivotal for more than a few as with 30 seconds to go a right shift occurred.  Feeling that they had spotted something good more than a few gave up on the plan to go left and headed for the Committee Boat.  Unfortunately for them the breeze re-established itself from the left leaving Jim Hopton to show a clean pair of heels to the fleet and take the win ahead of John Wayling and Crispin.  The very consistent Paul Beasley was fourth followed by Couch.

Sunday dawned and the expected mirror was punctuated by small zephyrs under a heavy mist making Wendy’s job difficult as there was more wind than expected but not enough to race.  The fleet waited it out and were rewarded with two races.  Race Four was won by Andy Couch who had headed left on the first leg followed by Davis, Paul Lester, Olly Hopkins and Gulliver.

By race five a strengthening ebb tide was sweeping across the course meaning that the pin had become even more crowded with everybody heading left yet again.  Matt House won the pin and his eyes lit up thinking of the glory ahead, unfortunately he listened to those around him and was persuaded that he was over even though only one gun was heard.  Andy Couch appeared from the left, yet again, to take the race followed by Davis, Crispin, Wayling and Gareth Griffiths putting in his best performance of the weekend.

In securing his fifth title Andy Couch made himself the most successful Phantom sailor in the boats 43 year history this year leading Davis and Crispin.

The Class Association would like to thank everybody at Stone Sailing Club for the efforts in putting on the event, our sponsors Seabrook Developments and Phil Longley for all his hard work including sponsoring some very special scissors…

At the AGM John Wayling stood down from his five years as Class Secretary and on behalf of the members we would like to thank him for all his efforts.

Next year’s event is being held at Minnis Bay on the Kent coast over 4-6 September 2015.

Jeremy,
Plymouth was meant to be this year however there were a few issues so stone stepped up and ran the event (very well I must add).
It has alway been minnis bay for 2015 and 2016 is yet to be decided.

Plymouth Corinthian YC have reserved a date for us in 2016, as was requested after this years event was moved to Stone despite everything being available in Plymouth.  So seems some miscommunication going on (again)

Sorry but thats a bit of a wishy washy excuse.

I went to Llandudno, that was over 5 hours drive, Sunderland was around 6 hours, Lyme was 3-4 hours. I was lucky Shoreham was only 2 hours and Stone 40mintues, Minis will be about 1 hour, sometimes you need to make the effort rather than waiting for it to fall on your door step.

Its the Nationals, the one 'make the effort' event

People spend a lot of time and effort organising these things and its a bit of a smack in the face when you hear the I can't be bothered to travel/ I'm not playing unless its in my back yard 'excuse'.

wishy washy excuse,  I'm not driving for that distance, to go sailing, I spend enough time away from home working, so being away with the car for 4 days, wouldn't go down well at all, I was thinking about buying a new sail, with people and comments like that, I feel like selling the sodding thing. Suppose to be encouraging people, not p###ing them off. I'm not going to justifie to anyone why I don't do things.

Yours potentially ex phantom sailor

While I'm on a roll, I've put various posts on here about Torbay regatta, anyone come down, NO, just did Dartmouth Regatta, second biggest regatta in uk next to Cowes week, cost Thousands of pounds to put on anyone come down, NO, I've put posts about sailing in south Devon, (best place in the country to be), any replies, NO, so I'll think about traveling up there when you come down to south Devon,

that's a rant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clearly stating you can't be bothered to travel isn't really incouraging to others though is it?? If everyone had that attitude there wouldn't be much of a circuit would there?

As for Torbay, personally I wouldn't, out of choice, want to go again, sailed there before, K6 nationals 3 years ago, the club isn't very friendly and launching and recovery in the marina was crap and accomodation was over priced.

Been there done it got the T shirt.

You will notice the distance isn't the issue its the experience once you get there thats the problem, IF the Nationals ended up there I would more than likely go back but ONLY because it was the Nationals

Torbay week and Dartmouth week are run over the same week/ weekend, so impossible to do both!

They are also the week before the Nationals, maybe not everyone wants to travel too far and risk damaging their boat before the main Phantom event of the year that far from home?

Also on the same weekend, 11 Phantoms were at Burnham and 5 were at Stone, why go much further with a larger fleet nearer home that close to the Nationals?

Timing of events is the issue, which is something the Association is trying to resolve

Lots of people have travelled many miles and make the effort to travel all round the country, you obviously don't and have no intention to, don't expect others to put themselves out if you clearly state you can't be bothered

As the XPCAS its been tough trying to pleeze all the people all the time. :o

I hope Ian's survey stirs up enough interest to make the right decisions.

For our Phantom sailors who live on the fringes, its always difficult because to get anywhere its at least 3 hrs drive (Scotland, Cornwall and Wales are fine examples of the fringes)

By moving the Nationals around our hope was to encourage everyone to travel a bit, I am lucky I live in the Middle so any a Nationals is going to be 3 hrs drive, but I go to them all where ever they are to support my class and bolster the numbers. Bigger fleets make for better racing ;)

So looking forward to Minnis this weekend and again next year for the 2015 Nationals, as to 2016 where ever the Nationals is I will be there too... 8) 8) 8)
