Starcross Steamer
« on: January 19, 2009, 08:23:36 PM »

Last Sunday all the SW Phantoms must have gone to the boat show or believed the forecast and stayed in bed.  2 travelling Phantoms joined G Hutchinson, 1147, of the home club for the annual Starcross Steamer Pursuit race.  After chasing down various floating road blocks, mainly Solo and Finn shaped Simon "Coastbuster"  piloted 1218 into a phantastic 6th place and 1st singlehander. John "Springer" 1270 after various mistakes managed a creditable 21st, 3rd of the singlehanders, and the local Phantom finished 47 of 55 starters.
With very variable wind off the land and some long reaches the top Merlin Rockets could not be beaten. What is all that rubbish about handicaps?  It was noted that Simon may have had some fun taking a kite flying Merlin head to wind when trying to overtake him to windward!  An excellant well run event in attractive surroundings. Let's see some more Phantoms for next years event.
