« on: July 02, 2009, 07:16:39 PM »

Hi, I have just finished restoring 499 'Funky Phantom'  (photos at the below link)

Does anyone how old this boat would be or know anything of it's history

Cheers

Hi Rich
I have one of those, but yours looks so good, well done.  My sail number is 693 and I have been told my boat is early 80's, but I dont care cos i love her (and i could show you my bruses from this weekends capsize)
on a reach i can pass almost any boat. Go out and enjoy her, she looks great.

It's hard to see in the photos, but I have built a small false floor around the rear of the centreboard case. This has both non slip paint & non slip tape and should hopefully help take some of the stress of the original floor whilst I fall about a lot trying to learn how to sail the thing :D.

I don't know how old 499 is but it is probably pre 1978. I have a list of known Phantom owners in April 1978 and it ends at sail number 738, although sail number 499 is missing. There is,  of course, a small possibility that the number 499 was not used until a later date as I believe the numbers were sometimes issued in batches.

For example, numbers 501 to 550 were allocated to South Africa.

Sail number 693 is older than early 80's as in 1978 it was owned by a R. Harris of Great Yarmouth.

Whiskywill, thanks very much for the info. The only clue to the boat number was the sail which came with it, Ican find nothing marked on the hull. The sail looked like the original one and was made by 'A Team' (never heard of them before). The boat was in very original condition when I got it, everything seems to  point to a build date of mid to late 70's i.e. bendy Needlespar mast, Tufnol clamcleats & Ermat stainless steel fittings. I am still trying to find out if a measurement certificate exists with the builder & build date ect.

Cheers

If you contact Roger Brown, class treasurer, he will be able to advise you as to whether your boat has a certificate. If it does builder, age etc are all on it.
Good luck and enjoy your Phantom.
