Neil, is this a cunning ploy just before Xmas?  Loud tut tutting etc. in order to get Santa to drop a new Epoxy Phantom down the chimney??

I've put one in my letter to Santa, but sadly I'm probably on the naughty list.

OMG.
Strung her up on the scales this evening. Just about gave myself a hernia hoisting her off the trailer....
80.0kg on the scales, minus 1.0kg for the rope slings = 79.0kg exactly :(

Or, if you're reading this in a year or so when I'm selling 758 to buy a new Phantom, wow, it only weighs 61.5kg!  ;)

When I had 900 measured it was 82 if I remember rightly. Mine had had some extra bracing and a new floor so before I guess was 75 ish.

I think 75, but it depends how it’s stored and how much water is in the wood. When it was new it should have been more or less down to weight as the boats were designed to be at the limit in wood.

The copy of the original measurement certificate says she weighed 69kg new, so I was hoping for low 70's. Not sure where another 10kg came from!

She's been dry stored for the last 5 years, so probably about as dry as she'll ever be. There's a lot of paint on the bottom. Taking it all off might save a little bit of weight. Maybe.

Just realised I replied 30s before your post.

About as expected from most people. It probably has more fitting etc than when first measured, more paint and inevitably moisture with the timber getting in from places you can’t get to. Dry stored or not you won’t ever get that out without stripping it bare, baking it  then sealing it. All rather pointless am sure you will agree.

You also note that it was beautifully restored. There isn’t a chance that any restoration of a wooden boat will not put weight on it.

All in all that isn’t a bad figure at all for the age in my opinion.

1 ltr of paint/ varnish equals approximately 1kg

2ltrs per coat to paint a Phantom (?) 5 coats of paint over the years, theres your 10kg easily!

To be fair thats not that heavy, in 2010 when we weighed all 84 boats at the Stone Nationals there were a couple of plastic boats heavier than that, one considerably!!
Oh, and when do i get my pint, only 1kg out  ;)

Thanks for the input guys. All things considered, perhaps she's not as lardy as I first thought. The bottom paint needs sorting out anyway, so I think I'll strip the bottom of the hull and dry it out as much as possible over the next few weeks. Then a nice new coat of paint for the start of the season.

Phil - you do indeed win the pint. You can have it next time I see you - defo Felixstowe, hopefully before.
