From earlier exchanges and the passion expressed by some, everyone would have thought the numbers of owners identifying themselves would have reached at least 50 by now. In fact those prepared to be obvious as to who they are, number only about 12 or so! If the numbers are genuinely that low, then they are certainly a very boisterous group!!
I think there are a few more out there. Why not contact me and have your details added to the slowly growing list of Classic owners and let's get ourselves organised into a group of like minded people and meet up for sailing together whenever we can?
Please get in touch with me at "classicman@phantomclass.org.uk"
Mike, the Classicman.

Mike, i would hope you have some record of me in 810, it's being re housed in a garage in a week or two and i'm going to gain some experience winter sailing a 400 to come out next year a whole lot more experienced, so if you haven't got me down then amend your records...

Hi Mike,
Another classic surfaces - spluttering? I've just bought hull 868 on Ebay - to go with a tin Wavelength mast that’s been in the loft for 8(!) years while I sailed various other things - previously sailed Phantom 466 then 1036 at Findhorn - see Phanmail Autumn 2001 cover photo.
868 is a wooden self-drainer and will be sailed in Argyll at Craignish Boat Club, where Lasers are really the only single handers on the water. Have to see how I get on - could be fun!
Main question is - anyone got a half decent moderately priced used sail to complete the budget fun package?

Hi Mike
I may have already made contact! I have sail No 693 on Hornsea mere (East riding of Yorkshire) but I don't have a trailer so have to take on the local mob every week. Was a novice, but can now beat a few. Great boats Phantoms. All but one of the local Ospray owners here have asked me to have a try out in 693. Maybe soon we will have a fleet!!
693 (name change comming)

i have 607 in the garage

I have just acquired 837 and will be putting it back together as it was stripped for restoration and abandoned. It is a woody half double bottom and I would be grateful for any info on it as it has a layout diferent from others I have seen, and no certificate / paperwork.

Hello,
I am sure you have me down; 880 Famous Eccles on the Blackwater, Essex. Perhaps you could reply with a list of the boats that you currently have?
I would like to get a measurement certificate for her.
On the subject of classics; what is stopping 880 being competitive with the new boats? She is wooden so has the same hull stiffness she had when new, unlike a 5 year old plastic boat. Although not weighed she seems very light and is very well made (Harken fittings, Milanes foils). I am going to put the adjustable rig fittings on. If she had a carbon rig and was down to weight(ish) should she not be on a par?
I have always had the idea (mainly from Merlins) that the current incarnation of a class is always more successful as the top helms will always go for the newest, and are often sponsored to do so. To test this theory we should organise a Boat Swap Cup (during an open) meeting where we lend our classics to the front of fleet guys and vice versa.

896 is still afloat and sailing at netley, albeit with a P&B plastic sail and a carbon rig.
It's a Claridge hull, feels quite stiff for a boat of this age (okay, just how old IS 896????) and with the modern rig, bought at various times on fleabay so that nothing matches, still turns in a fair performance, though clearly nothing to compete with the newer boats at the club.

I have bad news and good news. First I own phantom 743 which has just gone to the big boatyard in the sky. The good news is I am just finishing building a replacement wooden hull. It will be afloat before christmas (yes 2008!!).
As this is a home built woodie does this qualify as a clasic?
-
These are all newborns compared to mine. I have sail number 5, currently at my home being revarnished but destined for Merthyr Tydfil Sailing club.
-
Hey whiskywill
Fantastic early number. Can we have some pictures. I purchased an old deep hull woody because it was all I was allowed to spend at the time, but now I would not part with her as we have a lot of fun messing about as well as racing. What do you intend doing once the work is complete? This association would like to get us all to get together one day, but I don't have any means of moving mine, and so race/sail every wekend at Hornsea sc (east riding of yorkshire) What about meeting at Filey in July (I think) even just for a gossip!!! :-\

Hi there, I'm new to the class and this forum. I've just bought number 866 in mind of a little winter restoration project. It is a chapman built self-drainer hull but the floor is cracked and probably needs replacing.
Anyone got any experience of doing this, different ideas, pics of their own restoration etc. All help will be gratefully received as I want to go about this in the right way!
Thanks
John

Hi re Phantom 866 this boat was built over 20 years ago and was the
first Phantom to have a false floor, If it is the original floor it hasnt done too bad . Send me more details size and position of the crack and I will help you repair or replace it. chappie
-
I used to own 866 - it was a good, fast boat. Easiest repair fot the floor would be to clean round the area that has split and epoxy a 4mm thick plywood doubler over the top. This should be easy as she has a flat floor. If you then paint with non slip deck paint it will look like it has bee there since the boat was built
Good luck and enjoy.
John
-
Thanks for your input guys, I was considering taking the the false floor out completely and going deep cockpit, but seeing as it was the first of its type I feel like I should restore it back to how it was. Chappie, I will send you some pics of the damage to see what you think.
Thanks John, I'm also John and it bought from it from John........creepy.
-
Thanks for the pics of the floor of 866, Looking at these Iwould suggest you replace , It has probably been leaking water into the bottom of the hull and you could make a much better job if you start here.
1st job...Remove floor to expose as much of the hull as possible,
go right up to the edges of c/board case, bulhead, and side panels.leave to dry out. Send me more pics.. C
-
so how difficult/worthwhile would it be to fit a false floor into my boat - K88? I really just want to stop it shipping too much water should I capsize.

Hi Guys,
Good to see there is still plenty of activity on this front. It seems a long time ago when this topic was first started, and to see it still getting good reaction is marvellous.
My own actions around a woodie has had to be abandoned. Got 909 from someone who had kept it in a garage to dry out and then rebuild, but he had run out of time and patience from his other half. I acquired it and allowed it to dry out further. However, when closely inspecting it, there was so little good wood left, the conclusion was that it could be quicker to built a new one (and into that I could add a host of modifications so it didn't fall to bits in very heavy seas).
Regrettably 'screaming banshie' has gone to the Phantom spirits grave after a quick cremation with plenty of hissing and spattling. Some one, I reckon, had left it sitting on its bottom in a boat park without adequate covers for several years. They don't like that al all !!
I hope a few more 'woodies' are recovered, as there are actually very limited numbers of them left. So well done to all of you who have made this wonderful craft gain a few more years of life.
Mike

Hello Guy's
She's not a recovered Woodie, but she is a Woodie that I have just bought off one of your existing members, I'm now the proud owner of boat 957, and I will be sailing her at Southport Sailing Club.

Hi Trev,
Good to see you're a 'classic nut' and making the most of the boat. Build up your experience and hopefully, we can get a number together and see about an event sometime.
What is needed now, is for those still with a 'woodie', to reconfim their interest (via this forum) and then I'll see what can be done.
Get in touch you guys. We need to know if you are still to be counted?

Hi All
Newbie to the forum, I have owned 2 phantoms in the past 1 got demolished on 16 Oct 87 and the other I sold on when I moved to cruisers. I now have no boat and I would like to get back into club racing again. I am thinking of building a Phantom and would appreciate any useful tips.

Just seen a claridge on ebay , curiously it claims to be sail no 933 same as mine , I believed my boat was 933 and has 933 engraved in it somewhere , I also have origional measurement cert no300301 , sail no 933 builder Len Smith , checking class champs it seems to have won nats in 1994 (date of build 1993) and sailed by Andy Leigh , though owner on cert David Smith
Can anyone shine some light on this ?????
