Frensham Open mtg format
« on: February 22, 2017, 08:59:33 AM »

OK ....  so we had some grumbling about over complicated pond courses involving up to 9 buoys last year and we are trying to listen.  We do use a lead boat for the first lap and please recognise that with shifty winds expected a course which has three different angles for windward legs in one lap should ensure at least one even beat!!  :-)
I know that Burghfield tried a full sprint series with mixed reactions and all credit to them for trying something different.  How about a hybrid event?   We were thinking perhaps:

We aim to get five races in during the day, which will mean some shorter races.
Accepting that we will probably start at 1100 and be ashore at 1600 latest, what about planning for:
Three quick races with less legs, maybe just a triangle, or similar. Max twenty minutes each. Then two 50 minute races, using a (almost) standard Club course.
Five races, four to count. Morning and afternoon races back to back.
Not sure if we have the short races am or pm.

Caveat being that anything will be wind dependent!!!  :-)  :-)

Any comments gratefully received.

Hi Jeremy
Are you coming to Wimbleball?
Do we have to have 9 bouys in each course in the afternoon?
Dont mind the shorter courses in the morning but may duck out pm if course is like last year.

Hi Gordon,

can I try and understand the concern with multi leg courses using up to 9 buoys?  We can do 3 leg courses but my worry is that you run a real risk of having 3 fetches and no beat if the wind shifts .... at which point I am likely to be lynched :-)  ...  Would it help if we had the lead boat show the way for the whole race instead of just the first lap? (Always subject to it not being needed for rescue duties).  We are looking at having different coloured buoys for odd and even numbers to help with identification but unlikely to be in place before April.  We even had a suggestion of knitted coloured coats for the buoys to make them more identifiable or marking prominent ones with Pillar buoys instead of round ones .... albeit that they wont have numbers on them.

Not sure about Wimbleball yet as it looks like I may have another appointment 'under the knife' ...  just depends on the timing.

Sounds good to me and once the first lap is out of the way even I can work out where to go especially when wrote down and stuck to front of boat.
Just follow me to the finish line Gordon.

You can't beat a sausage and a nice triangle !!

I agree to a point but the course you sailed at Burgfield (the current Olympic course) was also OK.
I know what you mean about writing it down but in the heatt of racing( if you can call it that on a pond in April) I can forget which bouy I just came from!
Some would say just going senile.

9 marks per lap? I want to do many more than that in a whole race.
As for writing it down, clearly not on the back of your hand - you'd have to start at the elbow!
