Spinnaker Open - Possible Change of Date...?
« on: March 27, 2011, 06:02:33 PM »

Hi all,

I've been looking at the souther area series and there seems to be a big gap in May!  The spinnaker open is just after the Nationals and I wonder if it would be better brought forward to Mid May.

2 questions then?

- Will it be a problem getting to an open the week after the Natsionals?

- Would an open in May at Spinnaker be well supported?

Don't be shy - let me know what you think....  :)

I would be up for one on the weekend of 14th/15th, can't really do after that as would be too close to my exams but Spinnaker is ideal being in Southampton!

might struggle but sure I can persuade the wife for the 14th or 15th May???

Week after the nationals is going to be hard to justify. Is there any chance for later in September or middle of october, otherwise the Southern travellers will finish in early July! Kind of means the season will be long over for us in the south

Ian I hope the Burghfield Ghoulie will be the end of season clincher!

We also have the Open day at Chew which has to be confirmed yet.  I was up there this week and did not get an answer about the combination of Top Club and Open event.

The challenge has been put out by the Midlands and also I understand some of the Eastern block may be available to uphold their honour in a regional challenge.

This may well develop in to the end of season Champs at Burghfield.

By the way well done with the video.  I just wish some of the audio was not necessarily quite so clear. Apart from where I refer to Slow as a complete To##er!  This was clearly true when you realise the camera at no time was zoomed in! ???
Cheers Simon.

Sorry Simon didn't realise that the Burghfield event was part of the Southern, its not listed as so on the official list put out at the dinghy show.

As for Slow...well you were only saying...

I contacted Burghfield and it is not part of anything.  They put the trophy up for grabs by a Phantom regardless of which regional accent it may carry. That is the prize. The fact that it may be the culmination of our series is an aside.

However I believe we can do better than the Eastern and the Midlands even if they combined forces! ::)

We turned out a great fleet last year and I think as an end of season champs and inter area compettion it would be really good.

I dont want to start a torrent of inter area baiting-but-------------

I just dont think they willl be up to it! ;)

Hi Phil,

Probably May better for me as Ice Hockey season pretty much over.  Sept is full on start to next season for Ice Hockey and league schedule not published till 3rd week August, so would not be able to confirm one way or t'other until last minute ..... Having said that late Sept. wearly Oct is usually desirable from perspective of more wind / less leaves   :D  so if in May I would hope to be there and try and persuade a few more from Frensham.   Sept.  ....  would hope to be there but cant confirm .... Hope you are coming up to Frensham this weekend??

Hi Phil

I shall come whenever.
Far too much fun last year not to try and repeat.

Would prefer it not to be directly after the Nats however.
Mid May looks a good option.

Can we please ban students to the Phantom class or atleast add 2 clauses

1  - they must OWN THEIR BOATS and not be borrowed/stolen.
2  - they should pack up everyone elses boats after racing before going for 1 pound a pint pub brawl.

Oh and May sounds great providing no students :-)

Personally I've found in other classesthat an event the weekend after the nats is often not that well supported as everyone has sailing fatigue.

I'd prefer the mid-may option..bring on the pond life...

Hi All,

OK - thanks for all the replies.  The general theme is that a week afte Lyme  would not be ideal.  The May option is looking too difficult at the club, and the chance of a dull drifter is too high.  I'll re-schedule for the end of October when it's more likely to be windy and wild!  :D :o

More info to follow, but I'll probably go for 23 Oct as this is 2 weeks after the Burghfield inter-region thrash.

Hi all,

Finally got around to making a decision!!

The Spinnaker open will be held on 23 October.  The strong breezes and close racing that delighted the visitors last year are guaranteed - honest :P ;)

Maxi, please could you update the website?
