Mast Choice
« on: October 20, 2018, 07:34:19 PM »

Hello all.  I broke my SuperSpars 60mm mast a few weeks back, and am weighing up whether to repair it (covered by insurance) or buy a new one.  I think it was as old as the boat so around 15yrs, and the broken mast was in need of relaquering anyway.

I can’t stretch to a high modulus mast, and am sticking with SuperSpars, but need to decide between their options:
60/15
55/20
55/15

I’m 110kg and 6’7”, but don’t hike as hard as I should.  I was thinking of going for the more flexible 55/15 for better gust response but wondered if anyone thought I should go for the stiffer ones?

Thanks

Dan

I'm 6'2"and 105kg and use the 5520. Can't fault it at all. There were plenty enough HM rigs behind me at the Nationals, and it goes really well in a breeze.

Thanks Rich.  I was wondering about even going for the 55/15 - lighter, slightly cheaper and might be even better gust response?

I'm no expert in these matters, I can only report on what I use.
I didn't deliberately choose the 5520, it was on the boat when I got it. And at first I was concerned I'd have to replace it. But now I think it goes well.

But if I were to over think it...

Gust response is, presumably, above the hounds. I don't know how that varies across the 3 sections.

But if it were too flexible below the hounds then you'd be bending and flattening earlier. possibly de-powering too early? Or cranking on a lot of lowers to compensate?

5520 still sounds like a good compromise. Although I'd also be really interested to hear a more educated opinion. Especially as this is regarding those rigs which are 'less' out of reach.
