European event
« on: August 09, 2018, 11:33:14 AM »

Hi All
Does anybody know of an event on lake Garda we could take a Phantom to?
If there is such a thing would it be something people would be interested in?
I have never been and here so many great stories about the place so its on my bucket list.
Regards
Gordon

I'm looking Gordon!

Not aware of any events but I'm sure there must be a way of getting one there.

I suppose it would be in the Southern Region?

It would have to be our Euro cup or something.
More likely a few nutters going for some great sailing, Italian food and wine.
I know for one Wendy would be very happy to join us.

Lake Garda in a Phantom guaranteed F5, fresh water, sunshine, Italian cuisine, stunning scenery - Gordon, nobody's gonna want any of that are they !!

i do think we ought to engage with Ovingtons on this one as they have experience of moving fleets en bloc, can provide in situ back-up. a wonderful opportunity to showcase the class if somehow we could join in with an established regatta. Thinking out loud how would this work.. Ovis invite interested Europeans to try our boats out at the event ??

Chris I hear what you are saying about it being a Southern event !  a big ask so how about a Garda Committee consisting, you, Will, Titch & Ivan ??  Phil L has enough on his plate maybe

I don't want to go to Garda and be blown out of my boat when sailing towards a cliff actually....

I'd suggest Carnac instead as its nearer and on the sea.  They are welcoming and other UK classes attend.

As to being on another Committee - no thanks.  I'm doing my bit elsewhere....

Good ideas Gordon and Chris,
I brought it up recently with almost zero interest. I think it would be worth doing if we got 20 committed first to go somewhere then find a nice venue to please partners too. We need 20 or so to show the fleet off, no point the same 8 or 9 racing against the each other with the usual placings.
I can think of about 10 who would go including me so 20 plus is not unrealistic.  Best place to discuss and gauge some genuine interest might be Felixstowe. Nice to have a chat here...

Springer ! How the devil are you? Still dining out on that anecdote I see !

Something along the Lines of the SMELT event? They are all double handed classes, so tagging on may not be an option. But getting together with a couple of other like-minded single handed classes must be worth investigating?

Chris Biglin has just done a Solo event at Garda organised as Solo Masters. The comment he made is that it is a bucket list place to sail at; however the wind and the course is always the same with positioning of buoys determined by it being very deep!
That said I would love to do something exotic - Salcombe is this years deep south event so even further afield would be great!

Medemblik was a great adventure, a lot went on including seeing Neil F in a state I never want to see again, eye bleach still didn't help!

It has been asked and banded around a few times to do another European event. Ian Sullivan had an event lined up, in Carnac from memory, that we could have done, but even with a lot of notice there were a lot of maybe but no 100% commitments so it was shelved.

I will add the discussion to the AGM agenda if anyone thinks its worth a discussion in an open forum?

It was Morgat in France which is a lot closer than Carnac
They were offering to hold it as part of their Grand Prix for small sportsboats such as SB20's and 6.5's
It's a little known place thats fantastic to sail but needs
commitment like all other events
Cheers

Morgat & surrounding region is very nice too

not a huge time difference though if travelling via Chunnel, Calais etc as it's possible to 'cut' across that corner of northern France - arguably more flight options too

stronger tides on that side of the Channel so would recommend neaps

Garda, Morgat , Carnac all good

Having just returned from an event in Gravedona on Lake Como and raced on Garda last year you have not sailed until you have sailed on any of the Italian lakes. Garda and specifically Tobole  is great for the apre sailing.  Gravedona is very Italian. Both are great venues and worth the long haul to get to them.
