Close start action from Mike Potter & co at Bala

Report by Le Chat

9 Phantoms travelled to Lake Bala for the Whit regatta. Race 1 opened with force 2 – 4. First mark order was Beloe, Crispin and Elliot and that order stayed to the end.

Freshening winds for race 2 saw Crispin begin to dominate but the wind advantage up the first beat had Ayres, Barrie and Downie Beloe Second and Elliot in 6th. Elliot's super fast downwind skills soon saw him return to the front three and the finish order was Crispin, Beloe and Elliot

Race 3 saw the wind moderate but Beloe whilst fighting it out for first was undone by the modern Phantom style of maximum Kicker and a costly capsize dropped him down the fleet. Fighting back though the fleet the finish order was Crispin, Beloe and Elliot.

Day two and the Absence of Beloe to a prior engagement opened a battle royal for third spot. Race 4 started with an individual recall that saw the majority of the fleet return across the line and a change to the usual first mark order with Potter and Ayres rounding first and second. By the end of lap 2 the order was Crispin, Elliot and Ayres and that's how it stayed. The race officer later told us that only one boat was over the line.

Race 5 and the first mark order was Crispin, Ayres, Elliot but in a dying breeze on lap two Barrie made huge gains up the right hand side to push Ayres for third place. With the wind dropping and the finish on a run a gybing battle between Elliot and Crispin saw Elliot come from behind to take the bullet with Ayres holding of Barrie for third.

The final race and with first and second already decided third place was all to play for. With a building force 4, Ayres started badly with Crispin, Downie, Elliot and Barrie in front. Second lap and Ayres had moved up to 4th place, enough for third if positions stayed the same. However Downie sailed an incorrect course and in the true spirit of sailing finished the race as he “was having such a good sail” and then retired. Crispin and Elliot took first and second.
