Phantom Eastern Series, Round 1, sponsored by JJ Boats/TemperaTech

The first event of the Phantom Class Eastern traveller series opened at Alton Water on Saturday with a training day with Jim Hunt. For some of the 20+ helms it was the first time in the boat this year. The weather had changed to cold, breezy and overcast and many had the chance to test the water temperature in the two on the water sessions.
Sunday provided sun and more wind than forecast and the 23 helms who survived injury, boat failure and a Phantom social evening had 4 races to look forward to.
For race one the eager competitors pushed the line and forced a general recall and the black flag was raised.
Chris Roberts had a port flyer and crossed the fleet but was soon passed by Jim Hunt and Bob Portway who were to dominate the days racing  .
The testing conditions with the 30 degree wind shifts and many calm holes provided many passing opportunities as the fleet bunched in the holes.
Race 2 was a clean start with Hunt and Portway at the front followed by Nick Radley , Roberts,  Paul Jarvey and Matthew House swapping places on the shifty beat.
Race 3 saw the black flag which caught out Radley who could only watch Hunt sail away on a predominantly reaching course with lightweight Jarvey (P) making the most of  the  gentle wind. Portway was buried in the pack but sailed clear to 5th by the end.
The final race was once again started under the black flag and Hunt and Portway, eager to consolidate their one two positions, were both OCS . The fleet was lead round the course by James Jarvey  in his new hybrid deep cockpit layout followed by Ian Pavey holding off Radley to within a couple of hundred yards from the finish before falling in and capsizing  to much applause  letting Radley and Matthew House pass before recovering to finish in 4th.
Prizes donated by the Morton Partnership and our sponsors were awarded to many of the competitors. Every competitor went away with a series t-shirt sponsored by JJ Boats/TemperaTech and a racing snake sponsored by Titch!
